No Ducts, No Problem: Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners are an Option

If your part of your home or business does not have existing ductwork, it does not mean that you don’t have any options as far as having an air conditioning system installed. Ductless mini-split air conditioners can be used in a number of applications, including additions where extending or installing ductwork for a central air conditioner system is not feasible.

A mini split is made up of two main components. It has an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. The indoor and outdoor units are joined by a conduit, and it houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain.

Advantages of Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners

Size and Flexibility

Ductless mini-split air conditioners are small and flexible. If you are looking at cooling a section or an addition to your home, some models have up to four indoor air handling units for four rooms or spaces connected to a single outdoor unit. The number depends on how much cooling is needed for each zone or the building. Each zone can be controlled with a separate thermostat, which means you only need to turn on the air conditioner for the space when it is occupied. This will save you time and money.

Ease of Installation

This type of air conditioner can be easier to install since the hook-up between the indoor and outdoor units generally only needs a three-inch hole through a wall for the conduit. Most manufacturers can provide connecting conduits of varying lengths. If necessary, you can place the outdoor unit at the back of the home or building while keeping rooms at the front cool.

Energy Efficient

Mini split air conditioners do not produce the types of energy losses associated with forced air central systems. Losses through ductwork can be responsible for up to 30 percent of energy consumption, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space like an attic.

Multiple Interior Design Options

The indoor air handlers can be mounted onto a wall, mounted flush into a dropped ceiling or suspended from a ceiling to work with any decor. They have a sleek and modern appearance, and many of them come with a remote control to turn the system on and off with the push of a button.
