Which Programmable Thermostat is Right for Me?

Buying a programmable thermostat makes good sense if you want to keep your energy costs down. If no one is home during the day, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to spend money running your air conditioner at the same temperature as in the evening when you and the rest of your family are at home. During colder months, the thermostat can regulate the heat in your home in the same manner. How do you decide which one off the many available options is right for you? Here are some factors to consider:

Choosing a Programmable Thermostat

Program-ability – Level of Control

How much control do you want to have over your heating and cooling system”

You can get a seven-day controllable system that will let you set different programs for different days. This is a good choice if your schedule tends to change on different days of the week. This type of thermostat usually has four temperature periods per day.

A 5+2 model uses an identical schedule on weekdays and another one on weekends.

If you choose a 5-1-1 model, you will have the same schedule on weekdays and separate ones for Saturdays and Sundays.

User Interface

Programmable thermostats are available in digital formats with buttons, and newer models feature touch-screen technology. As the technology becomes more advanced, they tend to get more complicated in operation and functionality. You may find a touch screen thermostat to be more convenient than pressing several buttons to enter your instructions, but you will need to choose a model that you will feel comfortable operating.

Each thermostat will have features that are specific to that model. You can find ones that offer remote-control operation, which is handy if you want to change your program without being close to the unit. Humidity control is another feature that you can get with a programmable thermostat. Too much humidity in your home can lead to issues with mold and mildew. You can even protect your setting with a password if you wish.
